Apostille and legalization

In the European Union, some public documents are accepted without any authentication formality.    For other documents or if the document is destined for another country, they may need:  

  • Legalization via an apostille: This formality consists of verifying the quality, seal, and signature of the document’s issuer by affixing a stamp, called an apostille, to the document.  Previously, this formality was handled by the courts of appeal and is now managed by notaries (since May 2025). An apostille certifies the origin of and signature on the document, as well as those of its sworn translation. Our article on apostilles explains in detail the procedure for obtaining an apostille.
  • Legalization by the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs: This formality attests to the authenticity of an official document so that it can be recognized in a foreign country. This process, supervised by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, mainly concerns countries that do not accept apostilles.
